From Newcomer to Leader: Building a Thriving Volunteer Funnel

Volunteers are the lifeblood of any association. Without them, many of the incredible initiatives that organizations undertake simply wouldn’t be possible. But keeping volunteers engaged, motivated, and coming back for more? That’s the real challenge.

In my latest video, I share three strategies to take your volunteer program to the next level. Here’s a sneak peek:

1. 💪Understand the Power of Little v and Big V Opportunities

Not all volunteer opportunities are created equal! Little v roles are quick, fun tasks like greeting attendees, moderating a chat, or assembling event materials. Big V roles, like serving on a board or committee, require a much more significant commitment. To truly engage your volunteers, you need a mix of both. Little v opportunities introduce people to volunteering, while Big Vs create leadership opportunities for those ready to go all in.

2. 🔻Build Your Volunteer Funnel

Think of it as a journey. Start by inviting members into enjoyable, low-commitment, and rewarding roles. As they gain confidence and experience, gradually offer them opportunities that require more time and responsibility. This funnel approach turns hesitant newcomers into passionate contributors ready to step into leadership when the time is right.

3. 🎉Celebrate, Celebrate, Celebrate!

Nothing kills enthusiasm faster than feeling unappreciated. From quick thank-yous for small tasks to public recognition for significant contributions, celebrating your volunteers is super important. Show them their time and effort matter, and they’ll be more likely to stay engaged.
