How to Host Virtual Networking People Actually Love

"Virtual networking events don’t work." I heard this recently, and it was said with total confidence. I totally get it. You have probably sat through an awkward Zoom room, too.

But virtual networking can absolutely work. Let’s break down three essential strategies that will transform your online gatherings.

1. Set a Clear Purpose

One of the best virtual networking events I’ve ever joined started with a single question: What are your goals for the next 90 days?

Suddenly, the room shifted from small talk to real talk. People weren’t just introducing themselves—they were collaborating, mentoring, and growing together.

Ask yourself: What outcome do I want participants to leave with?

Whether it’s goal-setting, peer feedback, or idea sharing, give your virtual networking event a clear purpose and’ let that purpose shape everything.

2. Design for Group Size

One of the biggest mistakes in virtual networking? Letting 30 people loose in a single Zoom room with no direction.

In groups of 14 or more people, participation drops dramatically. Most attendees become passive observers unless you build structure into the session. For these larger groups, be ready with activities, questions, or clear prompts. The bigger the group, the more structure you need.

3. Set a Positive Tone

Set a positive tone before participants click that Zoom link: in the language on your registration page, in the tone of your confirmation emails, and in how you welcome people into the space.

Ask yourself, “How do I want my attendees to feel?”

Connected? Energized? Empowered? Choose 2–3 core emotions, and build your event experience around them. This clarity changes how you write, how you facilitate, and how your community shows up.
